Meet our Faculty

Sebastian Garren

Executive Director

Mr. Sebastian Garren has had the pleasure of teaching at JPII since 2015. He received a BA in Classical Languages and minors in Philosophy and Medieval Studies at Wabash College, was president of the Newman Center, was a Fulbright Scholar for Education in Finland, and is a Progress Fellow through Emergent Ventures at the Mercatus Center.

He is the founding director of St. John Paul II Preparatory South and teaches a broad range of classes to students, which are known for perfectly balancing delight with real learning.

An avid reader, he reads economics, folk tales, classics, poetry, and children’s books – really everything except 19th century French novels, which he has an irrational prejudice against.

5 things we love about JPII

JPII is first and foremost a community of Catholics striving together to live the Faith with confidence and joy.

JPII’s classical curriculum puts them in contact with the the greatest minds of Western Civilization and frees them to carry on the work of civilization and Christian culture.

JPII’s teachers work closely with their parent co-teachers to ensure seamless application of our hybrid model; they challenge students with every step to analyze, compare, evaluate, and create.

JPII’s students learn independence and self-efficacy through the hybrid model, and so are better equipped to grow in God’s grace and use their talents.

JPII’s close-knit “community of friends” works together with a level of courtesy, generosity, helpfulness, and kindness that is seldom experienced in organizations; people treat one another with a high degree of Christian charity and respect.

She earned a B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD in 2006, and a Master’s in Teaching from Western Oregon University in 2008. She specializes in middle school Language Arts and American History. Jenny and her husband, Allen, homeschooled their children for three years, giving her a true appreciation for the “best of both worlds” hybrid model of education which JPII offers.

She is extremely happy to be part of the JPII family as a teacher and a mother of five enrolled students.

Jenny has no spare time between mothering and teaching duties, but enjoys playing classic Nintendo games, planing fun birthday parties for their seven children, and Jazzercising unironically.

Mary Hermann

Mary Hermann

Teacher

Mary Hermann teaches pre-algebra. The 4th of 10 children, she has worked at JPII St Charles in the past and has several siblings who are JPII graduates (and a brother who met his wife when they were both teachers at JPII). She was a lay consecrated woman for 12 years, half of which were spent working at a boarding school in Rhode Island. She holds a bachelor’s degree in religious and pastoral studies and has taught Middle School religion for 10 years. She chased her now husband Alex for a whole summer before he realized she was interested. Eventually (with the help of a novena and a comment from a friend) it worked and they married in 2021. They have an active and outgoing one year old (named after St John Paul II) who makes sure they don’t get too much sleep and that they notice every truck on the road. She enjoys reading, baking, doing puzzles, listening to audiobooks, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Alysia Horst

Alysia Horst

Teacher - Writing, British Literature, Modern History, Algebra

Alysia Horst graduated from University of Missouri St. Louis summa cum laude with a BS in Education and a BA in English Literature.  She taught 2nd grade for a year at Immaculate Conception in Union, MO and high school literature and writing and career preparation for two years at New Haven High School in New Haven, MO, before becoming a stay-at-home mom to her three children. Since 1998 she has taught catechesis. After a few years of her children attending their parish school, she transitioned to homeschooling. Through a series of promptings of the Holy Spirit, she enrolled her son at JPII, then the two girls followed shortly, and in 2016 Mrs. Horst began teaching at JPII.  She taught 6th grade math, Latin, and physics, was a science assistant and lower school assistant, until landing as a Literature, Algebra I, and Modern World History teacher.  When a need for these areas arose at South Campus, Mrs. Horst gladly moved to assist the growing community, wishing to expand access to the wonderful classical hybrid education which has served her family well.
In her “free” time, Mrs. Horst loves to read and “glamp” with her husband and dream of future grandchildren to spoil.
Anthony Houser

Anthony Houser

Teacher

Michael Martel

Michael Martel

Teacher - Latin, Philosophy, Patristics, Precalculus

After studying at Thomas Aquinas College, Mr. Martel knew what he wanted to do with his life. The delight and wonder of learning were what he wanted to pass on to the younger generations. He has been involved with the home-schooling community here in St. Louis since the 1980’s and served as teacher at Gateway Academy and now currently at St. John Paul II. What Mr. Martel likes about JPII is its dedication to a classical curriculum as the best foundation for a solid education and its 3-day format allowing the parents to actively exercise their very important role of mentoring their children’s formation.

The Catholic faith also plays a central role in the presentation of all academic subjects integrating faith and reason so necessary for proper human development. All that he loved and was privileged to learn while at Thomas Aquinas College is what he wishes for all students of JPII.

John Tardiff
